WELLINGTON, FL—2009 professional polo tournament play got underway today with Isla Carroll, last year’s runner up in the Joe Barry Memorial defeating newcomer EFG Bank 14-12.
“We had a poor first half and I think they were a little better prepared,” said EFG’s Julio Arellano who was last year’s national scoring leader. “We got much better in the second half so don’t count us out yet.” EFG was outscored 9-3 by the half but managed to score four times in the final chukker to close the gap at 14-12 as time ran out.
Sugar Erskine of Isla Carroll said, “When you play the first tournament game you never know. You hope it works out and that you play to your potential. I think we will be able to sort things out on our play today and be even better in our next match-up.”
With the victory, Isla Carroll advances to Sunday’s, January 11, 3 PM Stadium opening game against actor Tommy Lee Jones, San Saba team. This contest should prove to be very exciting as the San Saba team has been picked as one of the favorites in the Barry Memorial Tournament. They will match their team of Jones, Sapo Caset, Toto Collardin and Carlucho Arellano against Isla Carroll’s John Goodman, Sugar Erskine, Owen Rinehart and Todd Offen.
Rinehart commented, “Preparation was key to our victory and with Todd Offen the reigning MVP from last year we believe we can go all the way.”
The Joe Barry Memorial has seven teams competing for the cup dedicated to Hall of Fame Player Joe Barry who won almost every major polo tournament in the World.
