WELLINGTON — In one of the most evenly-matched games of Iglehart Cup play, the Hawks beat highly-touted EFG Bank, 14-12, at the International Polo Club late Wednesday afternoon.

Taking the field for the Hawks would be the tournament’s only 10-goaler, Mariano Aguerre, the same player who scored the winning overtime goal in the finals of the Argentine Open championships.

EFG Bank was represented by the high-scoring contingent that took Sunday’s hotly contested match, 13-11, against Zacara.
Wednesday, EFG Bank led 3-2 after the first chukker on the strength of three goals from Argentine 8-goaler Pancho Bensadon. Goals from Hawks team captain Freddie Mannix and Argentine 10-goaler Aguerre ended the period.
Luis Escobar put EFG Bank up 4-2 in the second frame, but two unanswered goals from Julian Mannix ended the chukker 4-4.
EFG Bank took the lead on a goal from Andres Weisz to open the third chukker, but after goals from Julian Mannix and Aguerre, the Hawks led, 7-6, at halftime.

Julian Daniels opened the fourth scoring twice to give the Hawks a 9-6 lead before two goals from Bensadon kept EFG Bank in the hunt, trailing 9-8.

A regenerated EFG Bank took to the field in the fifth chukker, outscoring the Hawks 4-1 and taking a 12-10 lead.
The Hawks tried to fight their way back into contention, but brilliant defensive plays by Luis Escobar and continued EFG Bank attack kept the Hawks off balance for the final chukker as EFG Bank took the game and a berth in Sunday’s 3 p.m. finals against Patagones in the 2010 Iglehart Cup.

In the win, Bensadon led all scoring with nine goals. Escobar scored three times and teammate Weisz added two goals.
Julian Mannix scored five goals for the Hawks in a losing effort with teammates Aguerre adding four goals and brother Fred Mannix accounting for three.
