SAN
SABA, PONY EXPRESS TO PLAY IN FIRST SUNDAY GAME
AT NEW INTERNATIONAL POLO CLUB PALM BEACH
December 30, 2003
WELLINGTON - The latest chapter
in high-goal polo in the United States begins Sunday when San Saba
plays Pony Express in the 22-goal Joe Barry Memorial tournament
at the new International Polo Club Palm Beach. The game marks the
first official high-goal polo match at the new club.
San Saba features the high-flying duo of 8-goaler Hector Galindo
of Wellington and 9-goaler Agustin Merlos of Argentina. They are
joined by 3-goaler Luis Echezarretta and patron Tommy Lee Jones.
Galindo is a veteran who has won numerous major titles while Merlos
is a member of one of polo’s most famous families. His older
brothers, Sebastian and Pite, are both 10-goalers and their father,
Cacho, is a legendary player. Jones, the award-winning actor, is
a serious polo player who is known as a solid, hard-riding patron.
Pony Express features 8-goaler Alejandro Agote and 7-goaler Guillermo
Caset Jr. patrolling the middle with young American star Jeff Blake,
a 6-goaler, and patron Bob Daniels rounding out the foursome. Although
not as experienced as San Saba’s top pair, Agote and Caset
bring a wide-open style to the game.
Eleven teams have entered the year’s first high-goal tournament.
The semifinals are scheduled for January 15 with the final scheduled
for Sunday, January 18 at 3 p.m.
“We’re honored to play in the club’s first game,”
said Galindo. “We want to win our division and reach the final,
that’s our focus. This is an extremely tough tournament to
begin a season. We have to play with intensity the entire game.”
Tickets begin at $10 per person and are available at the gate or
by calling (561) 204-5687.
