C SPEAR RALLIES PAST EVERGLADES 9-8 IN YLVISAKER CUP ACTION WEDNESDAY AT INTERNATIONAL POLO CLUB PALM BEACH
January 21, 2004

WELLINGTON, Florida - Nine-goaler Paco deNarvaez scored on a 70-yard neck shot with 11 seconds remaining to lift C Spear over Everglades 9-8 in a 22-goal Ylvisaker Cup polo match Wednesday at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

Everglades trailed most of the game, finally tying it at 7-7 on Joe Wayne Barry’s penalty shot early in the sixth chukker. Chris Gannon put C Spear back on top 8-7 as the ball rolled through following a goal-line collision with 3:13 remaining.

Tomas Llorente tied it at 8-8 when he dribbled through traffic, fighting off defenders, for a tap-in with 2:17 left. But de Narvaez grabbed a loose ball near midfield with less than 30 seconds remaining, dribbled once toward the right side before hitting the game-winner for C Spear (1-1).

DeNarvaez led C Spear with four goals while Matias Magrini added three and Tommy Boyle and Gannon had one each.

Tomas Llorente and Owen Rinehart led Everglades (0-2) with three goals each while teammates Skeeter Johnston and Joe Wayne Barry scored one goal apiece. The game was delayed for several minutes when Rinehart suffered an nasty cut on his face. After getting taped up, he continued playing.

The Ylvisaker Cup in named in honor of William T. “Bill” Ylvisaker, a polo pioneer who founded Palm Beach Polo and Country Club in the late 1970s and was elected into the Polo Hall of Fame in 1996. Ylvisaker has won numerous major polo tournaments, including the prestigious U.S. Open in 1972.
