Santa Clara - 10, Jan Pamela - 9
Three sixth chukker goals by Santa Clara capped a come-from-behind win for Santa Clara over Jan Pamela in the 14-goal Freebooters Classic competition Wednesday morning at the International Polo Club in Wellington.
Santa Clara received two goals from Jan Pamela with Carlucho Arellano (5) filling in for Luis Escobar (7) on the team roster and quickly went to work with goals from Geronimo Obregon and Carlos Avendano for an early 4-0 lead. Jan Pamela team captain Wayne Garrison kept his team from getting shut out with a goal from the field to end the chukker trailing Santa Clara 4-1.
Two more goals from Garrison in the second chukker and shutout defense cut the Santa Clara lead to a single goal, 4-3 after two periods of play.
The two teams exchanged goals in the third, with Garrison scoring his fourth goal of the match and teammate Carlitos Galindo scoring his first. Santa Clara responded with a pair of goals from Obregon, taking a delicate 6-5 lead at the end of the first half.
Jam Pamela tied it up at 7-7 in the fourth, picking up single goals from Carlitos Galindo and Steve Dalton (60-yard penalty conversion) while holding Santa Clara to a single goal from Carlucho Arellano.
Both defenses tightened up in the fifth, with Garrison’s goal being the only offense offered by either side. After five chukkers of play, Jan Pamela held an 8-7 advantage.
Hector Galindo’s first goal of the game gave Jan Pamela a two goal, 9-7 lead, but the celebration was short-lived. Ensuing goals from Francisco Escobar, Arellano and Avendano went unanswered and Santa Clara claimed the 10-9 victory.
Wayne Garrison led the field with five goals. Carlitos Galindo added two goals and Hector Galindo and Dalton added single goals in the losing effort.
A balanced Santa Clara attack had Obregon scoring three times and Arellano and Avendano adding two goals apiece. Escobar scored once in the win.
