Orchard Hill - 13, Piaget - 12
In a choppy penalty riddled contest between Orchard Hill and Piaget in the semifinals of the Bobby Barry Cup, Lucas Criado broke out of the throw-in in overtime to score the winning goal for Orchard Hill in a 13-12 game that will usher Orchard Hill into Sunday’s noon finals against Audi.
A slow moving first chukker saw both teams combine for a total of three goals, two of them on penalty shots, as Piaget went up, 2-1.
Facundo scored the first goal of the contest from the field, but two penalty conversions from Piaget’s Miguel Astrada ended the chukker with Piaget leaving the field after the first period with a 2-1 edge.
Kris Kampsen scored the tying goal, 2-2, on a 40-yard penalty shot, but Astrada answered with his third penalty goal of the game as Piaget went on top of a 3-2 score. Kampsen added two more goals (one from the field and a penalty conversion) and Obregon scored his second goal of the day with Orchard Hill taking a 5-3 lead after two chukkers of play.
Three consecutive penalty goals took up the third period with Facundo Obregon opening play with a 60-yard penalty conversion to give orchard Hill a 6-3 advantage. Piaget answered with consecutive penalty goals from Astrada. At the end of the first half, Orchard Hill held on to a narrow 6-5 lead.
Astrada’s sixth goal of the game came on another penalty goal to knot it up at 6-6 in the fourth chukker, but goals from Criado and Obregon gave the lead back to orchard Hill, 8-6. Astrada scored another penalty goal and a goal from the field, but a penalty conversion from Obregon kept Orchard Hill in front, 9-8.
Piaget’s Jason Crowder tied it up at 9-9 to open the fifth on a beautifully executed blocking play by Astrada. Obregon gave Orchard Hill the lead back, 10-9, on another penalty goal, but Crowder had it all even at 10-10, with his second goal of the chukker.
Obregon fourth penalty goal of the game gave the lead back to Orchard Hill, 11-10, but the lead was short-lived. A penalty goal from Astrada and a goal from the field had Piaget on top of a 12-11 score with less than a minute left in regulation time. With time running out,
Criado drove the tying goal through the Piaget goal posts for a 12-12 tie and sudden-death overtime.
After a brief intermission and a change of horses both teams returned to the field where Criado took the opening throw-in and galloped down the field to score the winning goal, 13-12, in just 20 seconds.
Astrada led all scoring with nine goals (eight on penalty shots). Crowder scored three times.
Obregon led the Orchard Hill attack with eight goals. Kampsen scored three times and Criado added two goals for the win.
