Valiente I - 16, La Ensenada - 8

Following a 45 minute rain delay, Valiente I went to work establishing a 7-4 halftime lead before soundly defeating Ernesto Gutiérrez’s La Ensenada team from Buenos Aires, 16-8.

La Ensenada was spotted one goal by handicap from the 26-goal Valiente I team, with Miguel Astrada scoring the first goal from the field on a 60-yard penalty conversion, 1-1. Matias Magrini responded with a 40-yard penalty goal for La Ensenada before surrendering two consecutive goals to Valiente I’s Polito Pieres to end the chukker. Valiente I left the field with an early 3-2 lead.

Juan Garcia Grossi broke through the Valiente I defenses in the second period to score two goals to give La Ensenada a 4-3 edge. Valiente I fired back with Miguel Astrada scoring one goal from the field and two on penalty shots. The chukker ended with Valiente I on top, 6-4.

Both defenses tightened in the third. Shots at goal went wide or were defended, passes were intercepted. Miguel Astrada managed to score the only goal of the chukker for a 7-4 halftime advantage.
Miguel Astrada opened the scoring in the second half with a penalty goal. La Ensenada answered with a goal from the field from Grossi, 8-5. A goal from Pieres was followed by a scoring effort from Nacho Astrada, and Valiente I rode off the field at the end of the fourth chukker ahead by five goals, 10-5.

Two more goals from Pieres and a score from the field from Miguel Astrada had the Valiente I lead expanding to six goals, 13-7. La Ensenada managed a pair of goals from Magrini (one from the field and one on a 60-yard penalty shot).

Lucas James opened the final chukker with his first goal of the day, but the Valiente I offense continued to roll. Pieres converted a 60-yard penalty shot for a goal and Miguel Astrada added a pair of goals (one from the field and one on a penalty shot) for the 16-8 victory.

Miguel Astrada set the pace for Valiente I with nine goals (five on penalty shots). Pieres scored six times and Nacho Astrada added a goal in the win. Santiago Toccalino replaced Nacho Astrada (injured riding muscle) in the final chukker.

Magrini and Grossi scored three goals apiece for La Ensenada (0-3). James added a goal and the team received one goal by handicap.

Argentina’s Ernesto Gutierrez and his La Ensenada polo team made their American debut in a morning game against Bob Jornayvaz’s Valiente I team in the first of the day’s four C. V. Whitney Cup quarterfinals.

La Ensenada received one goal by handicap from the 26-goal Valiente I team and quickly added to it. Lucas James gave La Ensenada a 2-0 lead with a goal from the field, but Valiente I quickly responded with a pair of goals from Polito Pieres, 2-2. Matias Magrini put La Ensenada up 3-2 with his first goal of the game, but Valiente I team captain Bob Jornayvaz had it all even at 3-3 with a goal from the field.

La Ensenada picked up goals from Magrini and Juan Garcia Grossi in the second chukker, but Miguel Astrada scored a goal from the field for Valiente I and Nacho Astrada converted a 60-yard penalty shot. At the end of two periods of play the score was all even at 5-5.

Magrini’s third goal of the game opened the scoring in the third chukker and had La Ensenada on top, 6-5. Valiente I barreled back into the game with a pair of goals from Miguel Astrada (one from the field and the other on a penalty conversion). It was a give and take first half for the two teams, but Valiente I managed to eke out a narrow 7-6 lead after the first half of play.

Magrini led a regrouped La Ensenada tam onto the field in the fourth chukker as they scored the first three goals of the second half. Magrini converted a 40-yard penalty shot for a goal and added another goal on a 65 yard shot from the field from an extreme angle, tying the game at 7-7 and then giving La Ensenada an 8-7 advantage. James scored his second goal of the game as La Ensenada extended their lead to two goals, 9-7. Pieres finally got the Valiente I offense going with a goal from the field followed by a 40-yard penalty goal from Miguel Astrada, and at the end of four periods of play, it was deadlocked at 9-9.

Two more goals from Miguel Astrada had Valiente I up, 11-10, with the La Ensenada attack being limited to a single goal from the field from Magrini.

The final chukker was all Valiente I with Miguel Astrada adding three more goals (one from the field and two on penalty shots) and Pieres scoring another goal from the field. La Ensenada ran out of gas in their opening game and watched Valiente I ride off with the 15-10 win.

Miguel Astrada set the pace for Valiente I with nine goals. Pieres scored four times and Jornayvaz and Nacho Astrada added single goals.

Magrini was credited with six goals for La Ensenada. James scored twice and Grossi added a goal. The team received one goal by handicap.
